Classes for Adults

Learning marimba as an adult is about more than just making music—it’s about connection, growth, and belonging. In our classes, you’ll discover the joy of playing Zimbabwean marimba together as a group, while also building the skills of listening, teamwork, and community.

Through our spiral learning approach, concepts are revisited over time, deepening your musical knowledge and confidence with every session. Each class celebrates progress in meaningful ways: sharing songs with friends and family at the end of a session, joining in our Bring-a-Friend Week or One Song, One Community campaign, and performing at our annual Spring Student Festival.

Most adults begin in an introductory class and grow alongside their classmates, advancing through new skill levels and repertoire at a comfortable pace. With each step, opportunities for growth expand—whether that’s performing, traveling, or simply enjoying the camaraderie of making music together.

At Kutandara, we believe that music is an essential part of being human—and that you are already a musical person. No matter your background or previous experience, our adult marimba classes invite you to uncover that musical self and experience the uplifting, healing, and joyful qualities of music in community.

We offer instruction in music from southern Africa on Zimbabwean-style marimbas. Group classes give students an opportunity to experience music with others in a hands-on, experiential way. Students learn music, but also learn how to work together–and the importance of doing so.

In classes, you become part of a group whose success depends upon teamwork and cooperation. Discovering the advantages of working with others and contributing to the overall success of a group is a valuable lesson that we can all learn again and again. Most importantly, you will contribute to the success of the group, learning a greater appreciation for the part others can play in their own successes, and vice versa. Everyone gets to play and succeed!

Classes are small in size (6-12 students) and are offered in throughout the year to make the most of in-depth learning. School-year classes are offered August -May (Fall: 18 weeks, Winter/Spring: 20 weeks), while a shorter summer session is offered June and July.

In group marimba classes, students are introduced to all the various marimbas in the ensemble, as well as hosho (gourd rattles), traditional singing, clapping, and dance to accompany the marimba songs. Both traditional and contemporary styles are explored, as well as their cultural context.

Regardless of your own musical background, you can derive great satisfaction and enjoyment from music in our classes. Come join us!
