About Kutandara

Founded in 1998, Kutandara offers a wide array of ways to engage with Zimbabwean music. From classes for young and old, to open houses, from artists in residence to school based programs, from pop-up concerts to concert series in prominent venues, we are helping to heal the world through music. We use the vehicle of joyful, group percussion to create meaningful, personal interactions. We believe that music inspires, transforms, and connects us to each other and our world.

Our mission is to provide opportunities for people of all ages to experience the joy and interdependence of music.

When you participate in a class at Kutandara, you learn more than just music. You learn critical thinking skills, develop higher cognitive skills, and increase your ability to analyze and evaluate information. Teamwork and conflict resolution skills develop naturally and you enjoy the healthy, positive activity of music with new friends.

We offer instruction in music from southern Africa on Zimbabwean-style marimbas. Group classes give students an opportunity to experience music with others in a hands-on, experiential way. Students learn music, but also learn how to work together–and the importance of doing so.

In classes, you become part of a group whose success depends upon teamwork and cooperation. Discovering the advantages of working with others and contributing to the overall success of a group is a valuable lesson that we can all learn again and again. Most importantly, you will contribute to the success of the group, learning a greater appreciation for the part others can play in their own successes, and vice versa. Everyone gets to play and succeed!

Classes are small in size (6-12 students) and are offered in throughout the year to make the most of in-depth learning. School-year classes are offered August -May (Fall: 18 weeks, Winter/Spring: 20 weeks), while a shorter summer session is offered June and July.

In group marimba classes, students are introduced to all the various marimbas in the ensemble, as well as hosho (gourd rattles), traditional singing, clapping, and dance to accompany the marimba songs. Both traditional and contemporary styles are explored, as well as their cultural context.

Regardless of your own musical background, you can derive great satisfaction and enjoyment from music in our classes. Come join us!
